Do you know what the word ‘kaleidoscope’ means?
This Greek word comes from ‘kalos’ (beautiful), ‘eidos’ (image) and ‘skopein’ (to look).
It is an optical toy that reflects the colours of light infinitely. The user looks through one end of the cylinder, the light enters through the hole on the opposite end and is reflected by mirrors inside the tube. Some kaleidoscopes are made with moving fragments of coloured glass, which generate endless combinations of colourful images.
According to Wikipedia, a kaleidoscope has a ‘finite’ number of elements in a limited (enclosed) space, and yet it allows an ‘infinite’ number of combinations. It offers a concrete illustration of how we can create something new by simply rearranging what was already there. As a result, it brings together the seemingly contradictory concepts of permanence and change, identity and difference.
